When it comes to depression, migraines and arthritis it seems that more women are afflicted with these ailments than men. But when it comes to gout, the men are leading the way with more diagnosed cases according to most studies.

Before discussing what you can do about it, lets first discuss the common schools of thought regarding gout treatments. As you would expect there are a few schools of thought. One is to try to prevent the attack from ever occurring. The other angle suggests that you help people after they already have symptoms of an attack underway.

Which appeals most to you?

Prevention just makes good old fashioned common sense. The gout attacks tend to last for about five to ten days typically. Not every case is this way for obvious reasons. One of them is that if you are on multiple medications for your other ailments, your body will need a little more time to fight off the gout episode you are experiencing.

How did you get gout?

It really isn’t a matter of how you got it, but rather now that it is hear what can you do about it. Gout is caused by crystals circulating in your bloodstream. These crystals over time build up in certain “sticking points” in the body. One popular spot is the joints of the big toes. Another sticking point is the elbow or a knee. You name it, if you have a joint there is a possibility that you may experience pain there during an attack.

Not only are the circulating crystals part of the problem but when your body breaks them down into purines or if you eat foods that are highly concentrated with purines you run greater odds of increasing those static levels. This alone can lead to gout attacks. It is like the person that has high blood pressure eating every meal with salt. Do you think their blood pressure might go up a few points? Of course it would. It is only a matter of time.

Normally, you should monitor your diet to avoid foods that cause gout. We are not talking about a radical shift here. But if you could make a simple step around just one more gout attack would you want to know how to do it, no really?
